Supporting Students with the New California English Language Development Standards: Video Collection
This video collection shows the California English Language Development Standards (CA ELD Standards) in action in several diverse classrooms across the state. The standards are built upon three critical themes: using English purposefully, interacting in meaningful ways, and learning about how English works. The videos in this collection show examples of how these themes work together to improve instruction across disciplines. The videos portray students interacting in meaningful ways around complex texts, analyzing language choices, and deconstructing and reconstructing texts in collaboration with peers and their teachers.
K–2 Grade Span
Watch how kindergarten teacher Ms. Sovitsky supports students in discussing complex texts by drawing their attention to text structure and highlighting key academic vocabulary. Additionally, Ms. Sovitsky supports students in describing the events that occur in a narrative text and explaining to their peers why they believe characters behave in certain ways. Ultimately, students work together to retell this complex narrative text using key terms and focusing on text structure.
3–5 Grade Span
An integral part of both integrated and designated ELD instruction is analyzing language. In these videos, Ms. Garegnani guides her students in analyzing complex science texts by looking at specific language features. Then, students work together to analyze texts in order to deepen their understanding of both content and the language.

6–8 Grade Span
Both the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and the CA ELD Standards call for students, beginning in grade 6, to use textual evidence to support their analyses of texts. In these videos, students collaboratively analyze complex texts to form their opinions about related topics. They then work together to reconstruct and summarize texts.
