Learning from the Experts about the California ELD Standards: Video Tutorial Collection

Watch these informative video tutorials about the California English Language Development (CA ELD) Standards. The tutorials were created for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Professional Learning Modules for Educators, provided by the California Department of Education. In the video tutorials co-authors of the Standards, Drs. Pam Spycher and Rachel Lagunoff, and other WestEd experts, share information about the design and intent of the groundbreaking Standards and give practical tips for supporting teachers to use the standards in tandem with the CA CCSS for English Language Arts/Literacy.

If you’re new to the standards, the best place to start is to watch the "Intent, Structure, and Elements of the CA ELD Standards” tutorial.

For educators who are interested in learning about the guiding vision of the standards, view “The Capacities of Literate Individuals” and “California’s Values for Educating English Learners.” If you want to learn more specifics about the proficiency levels, watch “Proficiency Level Descriptors.”

If you work with teachers and are looking for instructional guidelines and ideas, check out the “Online Communities of Practice Tutorial,” “Scaffolding English Learners’ Academic and Language Development,” or “Using the CA ELD Standards in Integrated and Designated ELD.”

Note: For EL-focused classroom videos, examples of ELD instruction across the grade spans, and integrated and designated ELD, check out our companion video collection: Supporting Students with the New California English Language Development Standards.
